Sheriff Marshak weighs in on video recording officers

(Hillsboro) A Texas man is suing the City of Pevely and former Pevely Police officer Wayne Casey after a recording video of a traffic stop in January. Matthew Rankin, of Corpus Christi, alleged he was illegally detained and the officer used unnecessary force to pry open his hand to take away his phone. Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak says he’s seen the footage and other video footage of other similar incidents, and has used them to teach his deputies what is acceptable and what is not.

Marshak says the public does have the right to record officers during traffic stops and other interactions.

Former Pevely officer Wayne Casey was fired by the city back in May after he allegedly had knowledge of an officer-involved assault of a man in custody but did not report it.
