A man from Salem is being charged in connection with an axe attack that occurred early Monday morning.

The Salem News Online reports that 50-year old Wayne D. Head is faces charges of burglary in the first degree, plus armed criminal action and first degree assault.

Head allegedly broke into a Dent County home on County Road 5020, where a man and his grandson were sleeping.

The grandson was woken up by the sound of breaking glass, while the eventual victim of the attack was alerted when he heard his grandson yelling.

When the victim went into the hallway, Head was there with an axe and demanded that the victim give him a gun.

The victim engaged Head to allow his grandson to escape, and he did by jumping out of a window.

Head struck the victim several times with the axe in the head and face area before the victim got away with his grandson and drove away.

The two made it to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32/72 with the victim covered in blood and the incident was reported to the police at that point.

The victim was treated at Salem Memorial District Hospital for several head lacerations and wounds to his arm.

Head was later found at a different residence and arrested.

He is being held on a $200,000 bond.
