American Legion District 13 tourney begins on Regional Radio
(Ste. Genevieve) The annual American Legion baseball District 13 tournament takes place this week, and nobody has you covered better than Regional Radio starting with a doubleheader Tuesday on KREI and KJFF.
The first game of the night pits Mineral Area Post 416 against Festus #253.
Mineral Area is just 5-4 but won five of the 8 district games they played this season.
Kooper Kekec has built on an all-state spring with the North County Raiders by posting a .455 batting average this summer.
Central Rebels graduates Nate Hamski and Brendon Jenkins lead a pitching staff with a championship resume.
#416 head coach Larry Kekec feels the pieces are all in place for his team to chase down a title.
Festus ripped off 6 wins in their final 7 games of the regular season to improve to 11-13.
Festus Tigers alum Laine Axtetter is having a big season, hitting .392 with 5 doubles, 3 triples, a home run, 16 runs batted in and 19 runs scored.
Pitching is also rounding into form for #253 thanks to aces like Festus’ Nate Moore and Dylan Black of the Herculaneum Blackcats.
Head coach Aaron Mayer says the guys are buying into the program’s tradition of excellence.
Our second game of the evening will be between #4 Rock Memorial Post 283 and the #1 overall seed Ste. Genevieve Post 150.
Ste. Genevieve is 17-8 on the year and already punched their ticket to the Zone tournament by winning the regular season.
But just because head coach Junie Basler and company don’t need to win the district tournament, doesn’t mean they’ll be complacent this week.
Post 150 is loaded with talent with guys like Josh Bieser of the Valle Catholic Warriors, Aiden and Zach Boyer of the Ste. Genevieve Dragons and Central’s Slade Schweiss.
However for Basler, he says his team’s success starts with their depth on the mound.
Rock Memorial is 12-9, won 7 of their last 9 games and defeated DeSoto SMCI Monday night 5-3 in the first round.
Post 283 has seen good hitting from Hunter Ward of the Windsor Owls, Nick Daugherty of the Fox Warriors and Fox alum Chase Blumer.
But head coach Dan Sigman says everyone needs to be ready at the plate against Ste. Genevieve.
Ste. Gen battles Rock Memorial after Festus faces Mineral Area.
