Both South Iron Teams Victorious In BRL Tournament On J98

(Ellington) The South Iron Panthers and Lady Panthers both took home championships in the Black River League Tournament on Saturday. On the girls’ side, South Iron defeated Ellington 59-33, while the boys knocked off Bunker 49-43.

After a close first half in the girls’ game, South Iron dominated the second half by a score of 33-9. They relied on a swarming, aggressive defense heavy on double teams and full-court pressing to force turnovers and missed shots, and used that defense to generate offense, including a three-pointer by Anna Parker to close the third quarter.

After the game, South Iron head coach Jimbo Blackwell praised his team’s ability to keep up their pressure throughout the game.

The Lady Panthers have now won 14 straight games and improve their record to 16-1. Ellington falls to 8-7.

Following the girls win, the South Iron boys finished the game on a 9-0 run to seal their win over Bunker. Bunker led by as much as 12 points and held a 27-17 lead going into the break. Mello Henderson hit three three-pointers in the second quarter…
