Catalytic converter thefts and prevention tips

(Hillsboro, Arnold) Catalytic converter thefts have become a major problem in Jefferson County, the St. Louis region, and the nation for that matter. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell says there was another case of stolen converters earlier this week.

The most common targets are vehicles like commercial trucks, pick-up trucks, and SUVs because they sit higher off the ground to make it easier access for thieves. Bissell says some vehicle owners have gotten clever with their prevention measures.

Law enforcement agencies have recommended that vehicle owners park their vehicles in secured locations, either a garage if possible, or a well-lit area. Although the official numbers have not been released yet, the number of catalytic converter thefts in 2022 was on pace to eclipse the totals in 2021.
