(Hillsboro) A 65-year-old Jefferson County man, accused of murdering his wife on July 11th of 2018, had his case put on hold as he has been ordered to take a mental evaluation.

Steve Earnest Treece of Cedar Hill was charged after a neighbor called police after hearing gunshots.

As police arrived at his home, Treece allegedly threatened them, pointed a firearm at them and held police at bay with a standoff for a short time.

The SWAT team was called in and that’s when Treece surrendered.

His wife’s body was found lying on the front porch.

Besides first degree murder, Treece is also facing the charges of armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

Treece will have his case reviewed August 21st at the courthouse in Hillsboro.
