(Chaffee) It was a battle between two of the top baseball teams in Class 2 Monday evening in Chaffee as the Chaffee Red Devils played host to the Valle Catholic Warriors in the opening round of the state tournament. It was a one sided affair as Chaffee rode a hot hand on the mound to an impressive 9-2 victory over Valle Catholic.

Things looked good early for the Warriors as they got on the board just two batters into the game after a single and a sacrifice bunt attempt that was aided by a defensive lapse…

The Red Devils bounced back to seize control of the game with a five run inning in the bottom of the second that was capped off a bases loaded single into center field by Brennan Fowler…

It was all Chaffee the rest of the way, more specifically, it was all Breven Yarbro the rest of the way as he was absolutely dominant on the mound. After allowing a lead off single to start the game, Yarbro did not allow another base hit until the sixth inning. The JeffCo commit finished the game with 12 strikeouts and went 3-3 at the plate with three runs scored and the hit that put the game away…

Valle Catholic head coach Nathan Gegg says he’s going to miss coaching this terrific group of seniors…

The Warriors finish the season 22-6-1 while the Red Devils improve to 22-5 and will take on Ellington in the second round of the Class 2 State Tournament. We’ll have coverage of that game on Wednesday, the time of the game is yet to be determined.
