Class 1 District 3 Championship Game Brings State Championship Vibes As #2 South Iron Faces #3 Bunker On J98

(Ellington) The Class 1 District 3 boys championship game may as well be the state championship game. South Iron (23-4) and Bunker (24-4) are ranked second and third in the state, respectively, and will play in the district title game for the third straight year. South Iron won the previous two meetings in the title game and, in fact, the Panthers have won 24 straight games over Bunker dating back to 2009.

Dusty Dinkins has coached the Panthers to back-to-back state championships, so he knows what it takes to win in the postseason…

Bunker has had quite the turnaround under third year head coach Rod Gorman. The Eagles are 63-17 under Gorman but they haven’t been able to decipher the South Iron conundrum. The state ranked teams faced off twice this season, and Bunker had second half leads in both games before giving way to the reigning state champions.

On January 21st of this year, in the Black River League tournament championship game at Ellington High School, South Iron closed the game on a 9-0 run to win the game 49-43. South Iron and Bunker will meet again in the Ellington High School gymnasium Friday evening in the Class 1 District 3 championship. We’ll broadcast the game on J98 The Boot beginning with pregame coverage at 5:45. Tip-off is set for 6 o’clock.
