Class 3 District 3 girls hoops tourney opens up in Herculaneum

The Class 3 District 3 basketball tournament gets underway in Herculaneum Saturday with girls’ first-round games.

The third-seeded Grandview Eagles take on the number-six seed Jefferson Bluejays in the first game of the day.

The Bluejays have won four of their last 5 games behind junior forward Laney Smith to improve to 13-12.

The Eagles are leaning on senior Sarra Faust and junior Hailey Harlow to win 10 of their last 13 and move to 14-7.

After Jefferson-Grandview, seventh-seeded Kingston takes on the host Herculaneum.

The second-seeded BlackCats are 18-7 and are led in scoring by junior forward Paige Fowler.

But head coach Riley Blair says the JCAA Large-School Division champions are led by example by senior point guard Taylor Metcalf.

The seventh-seeded Cougars are 10-15, but head coach Christian Moulton has one of the most dynamic scorers in the are in sophomore Madison Nelson.

The final game of the day will see the 20-5 Steelville Cardinals try to make good on their number-one seed when they battle the Bourbon Warhawks.
