(Patton) The Crystal City Hornets are turning the corner towards being a baseball powerhouse again.
They will get to prove it in the Class 2 state sectionals when they face Meadow Heights Monday on KJFF.
Crystal City won a state title in baseball in 2010 and won 3 straight district championships from that season through 2012.
But the Hornets had 4 straight losing seasons before busting out with a 14-8 record in 2021, including wins in five of their last six.
First-year head coach Zach Weiss says a veteran team has carried itself like a winner all year.
Senior shortstop Hunter Bassin has lead the way with an eye-popping .563 batting average, 7 home runs, 20 total extra-base hits and 41 runs batted in.
The Hornets have scored just shy of 200 runs this season, and they’ll look to swing hot bats again against a Panthers team that won the Class 2 District 3 championship over top-ten-ranked Chaffee last week.
Crystal City seeks a trip to the Class 2 quarterfinals when they battle Meadow Heights Monday afternoon.
