(CRYSTAL CITY) On a night when Crystal City High School held a retirement ceremony for volleyball head coach Laura Helwig, the Lady Hornets provided a clean sweep of Valley Park on AM 1400 KJFF.

Crystal City defeated the Hawks 25-9 and 25-11. The Hornets got out to a 13-4 lead in the first set and won the set on Valley Park’s serve.


 
The Hornets then got out to a 6-0 lead in the 2nd set and once again took the set and the match on Valley Park’s serve.

 
The Hornets improved to 7-7 on the season and Valley Park fell to 1-18.

For the retirement ceremony, 21 former players of Coach Helwig’s showed up to give her hugs and cake. Catching up with Coach after the match, she was overwhelmed by the surprise of it all.

 
At season’s end, Laura Helwig will have completed 17 years as the head coach of Crystal City volleyball.
