Daniel “Al” Hulme of DeSoto, formerly of Crystal City, passed away Monday, at the age of 88. He was head of the Physical Education Department of Norberry Junior High School in Winnipeg from 1958 to 1965. Then moved to Festus where was the owner/operator of the Liberty Cafe in Crystal City, until flooded out in 1973. He and his wife Olive became American citizens in 1971. He took employment with Commerce Bank of Festus as manager of the new Crystal City branch location on Truman Blvd., and retired as the bank’s Vice-President. Al was an avid golfer, and in his days in Canada spent many hours as a hockey player, hockey fan, and winning basketball coach.

He is survived by his son Michael Hulme of Perryville, grandson Spencer A. Hulme of DeSoto; granddaughter Alexandra Hulme of Pevely, two special nieces, sister-in-laws Ann Pashia of Florida, Alexandra Brenneis of Canada, and Julia Madden of Canada.

Graveside services for Al Hulme will be tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at 11 at the Presbyterian/Methodist Cemetery in Festus. Arrangements are under the direction of the Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
