Drowning on Meramec River Near Steelville
(Steelville) A teenager from St. James is dead after drowning in the Meramec River on Friday in Crawford County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it happened just before noon on Thurman Lake Road at the Meramec River near Steelville when 18-year-old Logan Wright was swimming.
He went under the water and did not resurface.
Wright was eventually found and taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Schmidt.
This was the first water related death in 2023 for Troop I of the highway patrol.
It was the second water fatality this spring in the Regional Radio listening area.
The first happened in late March when a woman from Lowndes drowned during a high water, flooding event in Bollinger County.
She drove her vehicle into a flooded portion of a road at Perkins Creek near Zalma.
The woman was unable to get out of her vehicle and she drowned.
