Ellington girls cross country earns state team ranking

Youth has not been an issue, but rather the strength of the Ellington High School girls cross country team.
The Lady Whippets were recently ranked eighth in the state as a team in Class 1 and are fresh off a top-3 team finish at the Steve Waggoner Invitational Thursday in Willow Springs.
A squad mostly made of freshman last year still had an outstanding season, and head coach Chris Bouma says they haven’t slowed down with a team almost entirely composed of freshman and sophomores.
The past, present and future all bright for sophomore Grace Lloyd in particular.
Lloyd finished second amongst Class 1 runners at the Waggoner Invitational after a strong finish at the 2018 state championships.
But Bouma says she wants more.
The Ellington boys also had a highlight in Willow Springs, as junior Carson McNail won the Class 1 meet.
Both teams are back on the course at Alton Wednesday.
