Ellington Softball Captures 1st District Title In School History

(Southern Reynolds County) The Ellington softball team are district champions for the first time in school history. Ellington outscored its Class 1 District 3 opponents 29-0 across three games and defeated Bernie 5-0 in the championship game on Tuesday.

Whippets coach Chris Bouma has been at the helm for eight years now. He says it took a full team effort to make school history.

Senior Briley Bouma tossed seven innings and struck out 12 batters while giving up three hits and two walks. She is the daughter of Chris.

Ellington’s top five hitters went a combined 6-for-14 at the plate with two RBI and five walks against Bernie. Bouma says when that group gets going, it’s hard to stop the Whippets.

Bouma says this group of girls have been playing softball together for a long time and that they’ve grown to appreciate the preparation side of the game.

Ellington hosted the Class 1 District 3 tournament. Bouma says it means the world to get this accomplishment for his girls and to have done it in Southern Reynolds County.

The Whippets are 15-6 on the season. They will host the 14-11 Plato Eagles in the Class 1 Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 5 o’clock. The winner goes to Springfield for the state semifinals on Monday the 22nd.
