(HILLSBORO) Madness ensued tonight on KJFF in the 64th Annual Gene Steighorst Invitational Championship as the Eureka Wildcats prevailed 54-53 over the Hillsboro Hawks in overtime at Hillsboro High School.

Hillsboro led by 4 at the half and then by 4 at the end of the 3rd, but the first bit of drama happened in the final 10 seconds of regulation.

Then in overtime, the Hawks were down 53-51 when Garrett Pinkley tied it.

A foul on the ensuing inbound led to a Jhalon Asher-Sanders free throw that put Eureka up 54-53. Mark Moore tried to win the championship with a 60-foot heave at the buzzer but the shot missed to the left, giving Eureka back-to-back Gene Steighorst championships.

Wildcats Head Coach Austin Kirby liked how his guys were able to claw their way back after a hot Hillsboro start.

Winning the 64h Annual Gene Stieghorst Invitational improves Eureka’s season record to 3-0. Hillsboro drops to 4-2 and will be back on the hardwood on Tuesday at home against Ste. Genevieve.
