Experts Still Can Not Predict Earthquakes

(Farmington) Three small earthquakes have been registered in the Regional Radio listening since the start of 2022.

Many other small rumblers have taken place closer to the heart of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, closer to the boot heel of Missouri.

Jeff Briggs is Missouri’s Emergency Management Agency earthquake director.

He says scientists know more about our earthquake zone, even further back than the big ones that struck in 1811 and 12.

We asked Briggs when the next big earthquake will strike the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The latest quakes in our area happened three minutes apart Sunday evening near Lake Wappapello in Wayne County.

They were 2.4 and 2.3 in magnitude.

The other tremor was a 2.0, registered in early March in Madison County, centered between Saco and Twelvemile.
