Familiar Foes Meet on the Gridiron as Dexter Travels to Ste. Genevieve Tonight on J98

(Ste. Genevieve) The football District Tournaments kickoff tonight across the Show-Me State, and in the Class 3 District 1 bracket, the 4-seeded Ste. Genevieve Dragons play host to the 5-seeded Dexter Bearcats on J98.

These two teams have met every year since 2010, sometimes twice in a season, with Ste. Genevieve leading the series 10-4 over that span.

However, these two have split their past four matchups dating back to 2017.

Both teams have overcome slow starts to their season and have impressed down the stretch.

Dexter began the year 0-4 before rattling off a 3-1 record over their final four games – however, those three wins did come against teams with a combined record of 6-18.

Ste. Genevieve on the other hand started the season 0-3 against some of the best teams in the state – Festus, Valle Catholic, and Kennett.

They then stomped Potosi, St. Pius, and Perryville – and played to within a five-point game against the Central Rebels – to go 3-1 the rest of the way.

The bigger question for the Dragons will be their readiness to play after quarantining for the final two weeks of the regular season and not having played a game since October 9th.

Ste. Genevieve head coach Ken Weik says despite the time away, his team still looked sharp this week at practice.

The game of lore between these two teams came in the 2018 State Tournament when Dexter defeated Ste. Gen 25-19 in a triple-overtime thriller.

The Dragons came back with a fire in their bellies to begin the following season as they trounced the Bearcats in Week 1 of 2019 by a final score of 49-7.

Weik says he expects the Bearcats to be a much-improved team from the one they beat handily last year.

Coverage of the Class 3 District 1 Quarterfinals matchup between 3-4 Ste. Genevieve and 3-5 Dexter gets underway at 6 with the Flieg’s Equipment Pregame Show with kickoff at 7 on 98.5 FM, J98.
