Farmington, Festus seek to win Class 5 District 1 hoops titles on J98

(DeSoto) Champions will be decided at the Class 5 District 1 basketball tournament Friday on J98.

The Farmington Knightettes and Festus Tigers are hoping that it will be their teams that wear the crown.

In the girls’ title game, fourth-ranked Farmington battles Cape Notre Dame, the number-five ranked team in the state.

It’s been a dominant season for the Knightettes, going 18-3 behind junior stars Anna McKinney, Grace Duncan, Angelina Davis and Jade Roth.

Head coach Rusty Sancegraw says what makes Farmington elite is how well they slow down the opposition.

One of the rare losses the Knightettes suffered was a 42-31 defeat on February 15th at Cape Notre Dame.

The Bulldogs are 21-6 and have won 3 straight district titles.

Sancegraw says Farmington finally winning their first since 2011 would be momentous.

In the boys’ championship, Festus look to tame Cape Central in a battle of the Tigers.

Festus is 21-5 and has only lost to 3 total teams this year.

Lead by junior point guard Arhmad Branch and senior stars like Cole Rickermann and Eric Reuss, it’s been an excellent year.

But Festus head coach Jason Therrell says nobody’s resting on their laurels.

Cape Central has the exact same record as Festus.

Therrell says the message to his team is to not change who they are.

Festus faces Cape Central have Farmington tries to corral Cape Notre Dame.

Coverage of the Class 5 District 1 championship games begins with the Flieg’s Equipment Pregame Show Friday evening at 5:45 on J98.
