Festus baseball tries to channel 2021 playoff prowess into new season

(Festus) The Festus Tigers are hoping late-season magic a year ago becomes sustained success on the baseball diamond.

Festus went from a losing record to Class 5 District 1 champions by ripping off 5 straight wins last last season.

The Tigers finished 15-15 overall, and head coach Jeff Montgomery believes their fantastic finish to 2021 is something they replicate for a whole season.

The key to the Tigers’ postseason run and the reason they expect to win plenty this year is pitching.

Juniors Nate Moore, Ian Brown, Kaleb Kennedy and Jackson Gross all finished with individual earned-run averages of under 2, and Festus had a team ERA of just 2.64.

Montgomery believes he has a deck full of aces.

The Tigers will face a tough schedule and need to do better than just a .238 team batting average from last season.

But Montgomery says his guys have a winning mindset.

Festus split its first 2 games of the 2022 baseball season and is next set to play Thursday at home against the Potosi Trojans.
