Festus boys’ soccer eyes big jump into title contention

(Festus) The Festus Tigers are hoping for more consistency in boys’ soccer, and in turn bigger prizes.

After going 9-9 last season, only 2 seniors departed from the roster.

But while there are a bevy of seniors leading the way for Festus, all eyes will be on junior Stephen Darden, who has lead the program with 38 goals over the last 2 years.

Despite his scoring prowess, Tigers head coach Austin Burgert says Darden is a versatile player.

Burgert’s biggest concern is building a stout defense.

Festus surrendered 41 goals last year, but Burgert thinks experience on the back line and a capable new goalkeeper can make them stingier.

An older team might have fans thinking big for Festus.

But Burgert says the small victories coming first will eventually build into something special.

Festus boys’ soccer season by hosting their annual tournament the week of August 30th.
