Festus Man Guilty of Stealing U.S. Mail

(St. Louis) A man from Jefferson County is facing federal prison time after pleading guilty to stealing U.S. mail and fraud charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Ryan Kanzler of Festus admitted to stealing large amounts of mail from homes and businesses with a co-defendant and engaging in a scheme to defraud several banks.

Prosecutors say Kanzler and his partner would find checks in stolen mail and alter or increase them and present the checks for payment at area banks.

He also used stolen credit cards to purchase thousands of dollars worth of retail items.

Kanzler could get up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced in August.
