Frances Chance of Festus passed away Monday at the age of 94. She grew up in South Philly and went to work in the U.S. Mint until the start of WW 2 when all 4’9″ of her went to work as a welder in the U.S. Navy Ship Yard. There she met the love of her life George Chance, Jr. of Irondale, who had just survived the sinking of the U.S. Utah in Pearl Harbor. He returned to service in the South Pacific until they married 3 years later at the end of the war. They moved back to Missouri and settled in a log cabin in Caledonia which had no electricity, no running water, and a wood cookstove, but she loved it. They moved to Horine, Missouri in 1954 where they raised their sons.

She is survived by her sons; Jason Chance of California, George Chance III of Festus, Frank Chance of Mississippi, and David Chance of Festus, sister Charlotte Polino of Philadelphia, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services at Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus, with interment in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
