(Jefferson City) Governor Mike Parson is proposing to close 12 housing units statewide within Missouri’s prison system.

The move would reduce the overall inmate bed count by more than 17-hundred.

Department of Corrections Budget Director Trevor Foley says it would allow the agency to reinvest the savings in priorities like upgrading the department’s employee phone system, officer radios and protective vests for probation and parole workers.

In July 2017, Missouri’s total prison population was about 34-thousand compared to the current count of roughly 26-thousand inmates.
