(JEFFERSON R-7) It was a successful 5th Hoops for Hope Classic at Jefferson Friday night on KJFF as the Blue Jays boys team and the Herculaneum Lady Blackcats each earned wins in front of a jam-packed gym.

The girls and boys JV teams began the night’s activities before the raucous crowd witnessed the Herky girls beat the Lady Blue Jays 63-44. Paige Fowler made the biggest impact, leading the Blackcats with 22 points behind this heads-up play.

 
Fowler earned Applebee’s Bar and Grill of Farmington Player of the Game honoRileyile leading the Blackcats to their 9th win of the season and first in Jefferson County Small Schools Conference play. Head coach Riley Blair says the players stuck to the defensive game plan all night.

 
Herculaneum is now 9-7 overall, 1-0 in the conference, and will face Lift for Life on Wednesday. The Lady Jays fall to 10-7 overall, 1-1 in the conference, and will next take on DeSoto on Monday.

To wrap up the night on KJFF, the Jefferson boys team beat Herky 85-32. Easton Null led the way for the Jays with 25 points and Jon Weik followed closely behind with 19. Null got a bulk of his points in the 2nd quarter behind some easy 2’s and then some.

 
Easton Null earned Applebee’s Bar and Grill of Farmington Player of the Game and said the guys put forth a collective effort in the win.

 
The Blue Jays improve to 12-6 with the win, 1-1 in the conference, and will play at Valle Catholic on Tuesday next. Herculaneum drops to 3-10 overall, 0-1 in the conference, and face McKinley on Monday as the 6th-seed in the 5th Annual Bruce Thomas Tournament at Herky High School.

Between the varsity games of the Hoops for Hope Classic, the Long family and the Harris family, who each have someone dealing with cancer, were both presented with checks valued at $4,500 to help with medical expenses. The money was raised by sponsors and the Herculaneum and Jefferson communities.
