(HILLSBORO) For the first time since 1999, the Hillsboro Hawks softball team has advanced to the Class 3 state quarterfinals after beating Perryville 5-0 Wednesday on KJFF and KREI.

The Hawks wasted no time taking a lead with Emma Nichols at the plate and Bailey Shuman on 2nd base.

The scored remained Hillsboro 2 and Perryville 0 until the bottom of the 5th inning when Emily Mudd contributed for the Hawks.

The stamp on the game though came in the bottom of the 6th inning with one on and two outs and senior Reagan Short going yard.

Despite the loss and a 9 and 14 end-of-the-season record, Perryville head coach Dustin Wengert considers 2018 a success for the Pirates.

Hillsboro head coach Kevin Lucas feels pretty good about making history at Hillsboro.

Emma Nichols earns her 13th win of the season with a complete game performance, allowing just four hits and striking out 12. Hillsboro improves to 20-9 with the 5-0 win. The Hawks advance to the Class 3 Quarterfinals to face St. Louis Notre Dame on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pregame begins at 12:45 on AM 1400 KJFF and streaming online here.
