Hillsboro Loses 55-34 to St. Mary’s

(ST. LOUIS)  The Hillsboro Hawk’s quest to get to the Class 4 football final four ended Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s High School in south St. Louis as they lost to the Dragons 55-34. It is a final score that doesn’t tell the entire story as the Hawks led at halftime 20-14 and were tied during one point in the second half at 34-34. Hillsboro senior, Austin Romaine caught a pass from Preston Brown to get the Hawks on the scoreboard in their first possession of the game.

The Hawks led 20-14 at halftime and at the end of the third quarter, the Dragons led 34-27. Tying the game at 34 apiece in the 4th quarter was Jaxin Patterson.

But after the touchdown on the kickoff to St. Mary’s, the Dragons Chase Hendricks ran it back for a 95 yard T-D return to make it 41-34 St. Mary’s with 9:09 to play in the game.

Hawks coach Bill Sucharski says the 95 yard return was essentially the straw that broke the camel’s back.

After the game, Dragons head coach Ken Turner said he knew Hillsboro was a good team and he had to have a heart to heart talk with his team at halftime.

Sucharski acknowledges the loss means the end of the Austin Romaine era at Hillsboro, however he was quick to note the contributions made by 14 other seniors.

The Hawks end their season with a record of 10-2. St. Mary’s moves on to the Class 4 semi finals with a record of 10-2 and their next opponent will be Smithville who won their quarterfinal game over Center, 28-0.
