(HILLSBORO) Here is an update to a story from earlier today involving the death of a 53-year-old man at the 1,000 block of Tracy Lane in Hillsboro.

In a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Dave Marshak notes that 27-year-old Nicholas Smoot of Hillsboro is charged with 2nd-degree murder, armed criminal action, and 2nd-degree domestic assault.

Smoot is believed to have beaten his father, 53-year-old Eric Smoot of Hillsboro, during a domestic incident inside the family’s home. Eric Smoot later died at a local hospital from his injuries. Nicholas Smoot is also believed to have assaulted his live-in girlfriend, causing injuries to her face and arms. The press release continues to say that a witness told investigators that the elder Smoot tried to stop his son’s attack on the girlfriend. That’s when Nicholas allegedly turned his attack on his father.

Sheriff Dave Marshak wraps up the press release with a “thanks” to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for moving quickly with charges in this case. Nicholas Smoot is being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department expressed its thoughts and prayers are with the families of both victims during this difficult time.
