Hillsboro’s Mitchell named Dream Team Wrestling Coach of the Year

Matt Mitchell of the Hillsboro Hawks in the 2021 Regional Radio Dream Team Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Mitchell guided the Hawks to a third-place finish as a team at the Class 3 state championships.

He says it’s the coaches of area programs that make his kids better and that he thanks for this honor.

Hillsboro had a total of 12 individual wrestlers who qualified for state, including 7 district champions, 5 sectional champions and 6 state medalists.

8 of those wrestlers are freshmen or sophomores, but it’s seniors Zach McNees and Aidan Haggard who Mitchell says have lead the way for so long.

But, despite all the success, no Hawk won a state title as Gavin Alexander did in his freshman season.

And that, coupled with coming just short of a team championship, is itching at Mitchell and his athletes.

Hillsboro sophomore Griffin Ray made the 2021 wrestling Dream Team, joining junior Dalton Litzsinger’s back-to-back selections.
