(Jefferson County) A local Jefferson County teacher was one of around 100 educators from across the St. Louis region to receive the Emerson Excellence in Teaching award.

Cassie Peterein of Festus teaches kindergarten through 12th grade gifted and talented students in the Jefferson R-7 School District.

According to Peterein she had no idea that she was getting the award and she was honored once she heard her name announced.

Peterein tells us how she was nominated for the award.

The Emerson Excellence in Teaching award recognizes classroom instructors in the St. Louis area, selected by their school administrators, for their achievements and dedication to the field of education.

Peterein was presented the award in front of a packed house at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Clayton.
