Jefferson County schools are going to be closing due to the coronavirus.

The Jefferson County Health Department announced Sunday that, after meeting with school superintendents, Mercy Hospital officials and representatives from the Jefferson County Administration Office, all public schools in the county will close starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and stay closed until at least April.

All extracurricular activities are also suspended, and school facilities cannot be used by outside groups.

The Jefferson County Health Department says these measures are taken to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The anticipated date for schools to re-open is Monday, April 6th, but the health department says it is subject to change.

St. Pius X Catholic High School will also be closing according to a St.-Louis-area-wide closing of Catholic schools.
