Latest on Iron County Sheriff’s Criminal Court Proceedings

(Potosi) Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is attempting to remove the sheriff of Iron County from office.

Marshall Griffin from the Missourinet has the latest.

Also in Washington County court this week, Burkett’s attorney told the court the sheriff’s issued weapons have still not been returned to the Iron County Sheriff’s Department.

The attorney says they are in the possession of a third party.

The sheriff’s department also wants Burkett to turn over his other equipment issued through the department.

The judge says the firearms need to be turned over but Burkett will be allowed to keep the other equipment because he still holds the office of Iron County sheriff.

Burkett was elected sheriff in 2020 and he previously worked there as a deputy.

Last year, he was hospitalized for several months with Covid-19 seriously ill.

While hospitalized, Iron County officials sought to remove the sheriff from office then but they later withdrew that court motion after getting pushback from some of the citizens of the county.

This is the second time Attorney General Bailey has used the quo warranto lawsuit this year.

His first one was against St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.

She eventually resigned from her office last month.
