MAAA Boys’ Championship Called After Player Passes Out

The boys’ MAAA conference tournament championship game between Ste. Genevieve and Central has been called with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter after Ste. Genevieve guard Ricky Hunter collapsed on the bench during a timeout.

During the timeout, at which point Central led 33-17, several spectators were seen scrambling to reach the Ste. Genevieve bench, and Hunter’s teammates and coaches frantically signaled for help, at which point Hunter’s condition became clear. Shortly after, both teams retreated to their respective locker rooms.

Hunter regained consciousness within a few minutes and sat upright to consume a sports drink. He also briefly spoke to the medical personnel who came to his aid.

Hunter was wheeled off the court on an ambulance stretcher to an ovation from the crowd. A few minutes later, the game was officially called with a PA announcement asking the fans to “keep Ricky Hunter in your prayers.”

At this moment, it is unclear how the MAAA will proceed. The game could be canceled, postponed, replayed or simply counted as a win for Central as they were leading at the time.
