MAC women walk off losing streak with win at Jefferson College

The Mineral Area College Cardinal women used stingy defense and a surprising scoring performance to knock off the Jefferson College Vikings 61-48 Thursday night on KREI and KJFF.

MAC bullied its way to as large as a 21-point lead behind forced turnovers and low-post looks for freshman forwards Mariah Stewart and Kayleigh Winch.

But JeffCo would try to rally in the fourth quarter.

But freshman guard Ashanti Davis would shortly put the game away for the Cardinals by capping a breakout night.

Davis’ season-high 21 points made her Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game, while Stewart finished with 14 points and Winch had 11.

MAC head coach Briley Palmer said those players stepping up might have surprised others, but not her.

Mineral Area College snaps its 3-game losing streak to pull even at 3-3.

Jefferson College falls to 2-4 in dropping its Region 16 opener.

While the Vikings stay at home to face John A. Logan Saturday, the Cardinals will visit North Central Missouri.

Coverage of the MAC women/men doubleheader starts at 1:45 Saturday afternoon on AM 800 KREI.
