Missouri Wild Turkey Population Continues to Drop

(Jefferson County) Missouri’s wild turkey population continues to decline each and every year and has been declining for a number of decades according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

John Winkelman is the host of the Scenic View on KJFF. He goes over how the MDC determines the turkey population each year.

State agencies have been working diligently over the last 60 years to restore wild turkey populations and five times in the last 60 years the poult-to-hen ratio has been as high as 4 to 1.

In an effort to reverse the decline, the MDC and the University of Missouri have teamed up to conduct a multi-year research project to identify the reasons why poult survival is declining.
