New Area Code Coming to Missouri

(Farmington) The Missouri Public Service Commission is working with the North American Numbering Plan Administrator and the telecommunications industry on implementing a plan and the introduction of a new area code in the 314 area code region.

314 phone numbers are nearing exhaustion.

The new area code will be 557.

All existing 314 customers will retain their current area code and their telephone numbers will not be changed.

The 314 area code serves mainly the St. Louis region.

August 12th is the earliest telephone numbers with a 557 area code will be activated.

The P.S.C. says 557 will co-exist everywhere in the 314 region.

All local calls within this region must be dialed using ten digits rather than seven digits.

This area is required to eliminate seven digit local dialing by July 15th in order to accommodate the new 988 abbreviated dialing code for the national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline.
