Northwest boys’ soccer gearing up to take back titles

(Cedar Hill) Winning is becoming a habit for the Northwest Lions on the boys’ soccer pitch.

After winning a district championship in 2019, Northwest made it back to the title game last season and only lost a double-overtime thriller to the eventual state-champion Jackson Indians.

With double-digit wins every year since 2010, the Lions are a program that generates top talent every year.

Head coach David Willis believes, after some improvements in the offseason, the next star will be sophomore goalkeeper Alex Drexler.

While goal-scoring sensation Hayden Hatley is gone after winning last season’s Dream Team Player of the Year, offense should not be an issue in 2021.

Northwest returns 3 starters who scored at least 5 goals and 6 players who scored multiple times in varsity play last year.

Willis believes one of those players, junior striker Tyler Finder, could be destined for great things.

But despite all the success in the last decade, no one is getting complacent in Cedar Hill.

Willis is as excited for this particular team as any in the past, because he say last year’s heartbreaking end showed his squad that they are capable of something special.

Northwest will kick off the 2021 boys’ soccer season at Union on August 27th.
