Outdoor enthusiast and Jefferson County Native Nelson Scherrer Excited for Upcoming Black Bear Hunting Season

(Jefferson County) Missouri’s first ever black bear hunting season is set to take place in less than three weeks.

Black bear hunting is broken down into 3 zones south of the Missouri River with Zone 2 encompassing the Regional Radio listening area.

Jefferson County resident and outdoor enthusiast Nelson Scherrer was 1 of only 150 hunters to receive a permit in Zone 2, and 1 of only 400 hunters selected in the entire state.

Scherrer says he’s excited to be part of this new seasonal animal hunt.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation’s guidelines on black bear hunting, hunters can only hunt in the zone specified on their permit.

We asked Scherrer where he plans to hunt in zone 2.

The MDC is only allowing 15 bears to be harvested in zone 2, and only 40 statewide.

Each hunter is required to call the MDC prior to hunting each day to determine if the harvest quota has been met.

Black bear hunting season in the state runs from October 18th through the 27th.
