Prior to the pandemic Parkland cared for only up to two patients at a time that needed vents. After expanding their capabilities,  they have cared for up to seven patients at a time that required a vent. Dr. Dear says the ER and ICU need to be restructured when surges happen…

If someone needs even yet a higher level of assistance, Parkland transfers them to either Barnes-Jewish Hospital or Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis.
