Pope Named New Head Coach of Ste. Genevieve Football

(Ste. Genevieve) It is a homecoming of sorts as the Ste. Genevieve High School football team has named their new head coach.

A native of Ste. Gen and a 2006 graduate of Valle Catholic, Jay Pope has been chosen as the next head man for the Dragons on the gridiron.

He has been coaching football as an assistant for over a decade and has had the opportunity to learn under some greats.

Pope was a member of the Valle Catholic coaching staff from 2010 through 2018, spent a year on the Ste. Gen staff in 2019, and then was the defensive backs coach at Jackson this past season.

He says he has been fortunate to work with some great football minds to begin his coaching career.

While some fans in Ste. Genevieve may see some tension as Pope once again trades in his Valle blue for Ste. Gen green, he says that is something he hopes to alleviate in taking over the Dragons program.

He says he wants the Valle and Ste. Gen rivalry to be competitive on the field and supportive off the field.

With a young core coming back next year for Pope’s first run, there is a lot to be excited about with the direction of Dragons football.

He tells Ste. Genevieve fans to be ready to have some fun on Friday nights.

The Dragons finished the 2020 season at (4-5) for their first season below .500 since 2010.
