Schirmer’s shutout powers Festus past DeSoto in pitchers’ duel

(Festus) A freshman pitched a gem and the Festus Tigers finished conference play unbeaten by gutting out a 2-0 win over the DeSoto Dragons Friday on KJFF.

Left-hander Mason Schirmer tossed a complete-game shutout, powering past the DeSoto lineup.

Schirmer’s first 7 outs of the game came via the strikeout, finishing with 12 total Ks.

But Dragon senior Caleb Coleman also put up zeroes through the first 5 innings.

Schirmer kept matching him, thanks to great Festus defense.

The Tigers finally broke through for the lead in the sixth, and, of course, it was the freshman who came through.

Festus added one more on their way to winning their fourth straight.

Schirmer was the Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game, and he sounded wise beyond his years after topping DeSoto.

The Tigers end up 8-0 in the JCAA Large-School Division and 19-8 overall on their way to the conference championship.

The Dragons fall to 7-12.
