(IMPERIAL) The Seckman wrestling program tied a school record last year with nine wrestlers reaching the state tournament. This season, some of those qualifiers are picking up where they left off.

One of them is last year’s champion in the 120 lb weight class as well as 2016’s 113 lb champion, Kai Orine. Head coach Ryan Moyer says he is once again having a strong season.

Another wrestler that placed at state last season was Jeremy Ashlock. He took 4th place as a junior in the 170 lb weight division. Coach Moyer says Jeremy is currently ranked fourth in the state in the same class, but that a challenging match schedule is ahead for him.

Coach Moyer brought up a JV kid to varsity recently to wrestle against Tyler Paul of Francis Howell Central in the 106 lb weight class. Stevie Miller won by Fall in the first round at 1:13 for his first career victory.

Other state qualifiers from last year’s wrestling team that are looking to get back are junior Anthony Chellew, sophomore Gavin Moore, and senior Blake Fritz. Seckman gets back on the mat at 5 p.m. Wednesday at McLeur North.

Listen to the full interview with head coach Ryan Moyer Tuesday afternoon at 4:15 on AM 1400 KJFF Sports Talk, powered by McDonald’s.
