Sheriff Dave Marshak calls for additional police training

(Hillsboro) In light of another officer-involved shooting of a black male in the Minnesota suburb of Brooklyn Center, has raised tensions and protests over the past few days. Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright. It’s believed Potter mistakenly grabbed her pistol when she was trying to pull out her Taser. Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak the officer in question made a grave mistake, but these types of situations are few and far between.

Sheriff Marshak says he’s conducted training for Sheriff’s deputies in the past, and he’s seen mistakes made several times.

Sheriff Marshak is a board member of the Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST). He says they are looking at increasing the amount of police academy training in the future.

Sheriff Marshak says the last time the academy basic hours increased for Police Officers was in 2007.
