South Iron Girls and Boys Basketball Sweep Ellington

(Ellington) The South Iron Panthers boys and girls basketball teams both won on the road against the Ellington Whippets tonight on J98. The girls game got the night started and the Lady Panthers were able to pull away late to take a 64-51 win over the Lady Whippets. South Iron took the control in the second quarter as freshman Enzley Dinkins poured in three triples in the frame.

Dinkins was named the Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game as she finished with 18. The Lady Panthers led by 16 heading into the fourth quarter before Ellington rattled off a huge run and cut it to just a five-point lead with a little over two minutes to play. Then South Iron sophomore Allecia Cornell caught fire and dropped in eight quick points to put the game out of reach late.

Lady Panthers head coach Lawrence Graves says his group may be young, but there is a lot of talent.

South Iron improves to 3-1 with the win and will next host the Fredericktown Lady Blackcats on Monday. Ellington falls to 2-2 and will travel to Park Hills to take on the Lady Rebels on Monday.

On the boys side, the Panthers had no problem with Ellington as they defeated them 94-35. It’s already the second victory for South Iron over Ellington as they beat the Whippets 92-33 in the AV Thanksgiving Tournament a couple of weeks ago. The Panthers won the opening tip and immediately found two points.

DJ Prater finished with 22 points on the ball game and was named our Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game. After the game, head coach Dusty Dinkins says after a long lay off, he’s pleased with how his team played.

South Iron improves to 4-0 and will next travel to Helias Catholic on Thursday while the Whippets fall to 3-3 and will host Bunker next Tuesday.
