South Iron Girls Basketball Strives to Win Some Hardware on Final Day in Springfield

(Springfield) While the South Iron girls basketball squad came up short yesterday in their 47-43 loss to Leeton, the Panthers still have a chance to take home a trophy as they’ll play Walnut Grove for 3rd place on J-98 this morning. South Iron is playing in their third final four in five years and the Panthers have only ever won third place. Back in 2017 they beat Prairie Home 61-54 and last season COVID took away their opportunity to play for third so they were given third place. Panthers head coach Lawrence Graves says his team needs to use the loss last night as a learning experience for today.

Walnut Grove will present a tall task for the Panthers as the Tigers have won five state championships in the last eight years and have made the final four nine out of the last ten years including 2021. The Tigers fell to undefeated Platte Valley 49-44 in their semifinal. There is one like opponent between these two as both have played Leeton and both have lost. Walnut Grove fell 47-42 and South Iron fell by an almost exact mark at 47-43.

The Class 1 3rd Place Game between South Iron (21-5) and Walnut Grove (23-5) will tipoff at 10 this morning on J-98 The Boot with coverage beginning at 9:45.
