St. Louis Astronomical Society Offering Free Upcoming Activities at Jefferson College
(HILLSBORO) Jefferson College and the St. Louis Astronomical Society are partnering to offer several star gazing events this Fall along with an opportunity to observe a solar eclipse on Saturday October 14th. The St. Louis Astronomical Society currently offers “Aim for the Stars” nights the first Sunday night of each month at the observatory on the Jefferson College campus in Hillsboro. The programs are free and open to the public. The society will expand its program in October by offering the observances on each Sunday night that month.
Mark Jones of the St. Louis Astronomical Society says leading up to the eclipse on October 14th will be be a program on Friday October 6th from noon until 2pm to view sun spots.
Then, on October 14th, Jones invites the community to attend the observance of a partial solar eclipse. In Jefferson County, it is expected the moon will cover about 54% of the sun.
Here in late August, Jones says there will be a couple of attractions in the nighttime sky.
The observatory on the Jefferson College campus is located next to the women’s softball field, at 9873 Farm Road right off Hayden Road.
