(Jefferson County) A St. Louis man is lucky to be alive after nearly drowning early this morning in Jefferson County.

The highway patrol says 61 year old Roy Cooper was trying to pass a low water bridge on foot at Belews Creek at Highway BB and Shelle Estates Drive, but was swept away by a strong current.

After an hour of survival swimming, he was able to pull himself out on the creek.

After being spotted by fire and emergency personnel, he was taken to St. Clair Hospital for treatment of series injuries and exposure to cold water.
