(CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo.) – The St. Pius Lancers fell in a classic in the Class 2 District 1 semifinals, losing 40-29 to the Caruthersville Tigers. Caruthersville led 20-14 at halftime, but the fourth quarter was where the real fireworks occurred. Quarterback Carson Fischer capped a long Lancer drive with a touchdown run to put St. Pius on top. The Tigers responded with a takeaway and retook the lead 28-21, but the Lancers countered late in the game.

The Lancers went for two and got it to take a 29-28 lead. But in the final seconds, Caruthersville snatched the lead and the game from St. Pius.

The Tigers would add a pick-six on the game’s final play. Lancers head coach Dan Oliver said despite a bitter defeat, he took solace in his team’s incredible effort.

While St. Pius’ season ends with a record of 8-3, Caruthersville moves on to the Class 2 District 1 championship game.
