St. Pius seeks sectionals win in baseball over Valley Park on KJFF
(Valley Park) The St. Pius Lancers look to continue a phenomenal season when they take on Valley Park in the Class 3 baseball state sectionals Tuesday on KJFF.
St. Pius, ranked third in the state, has ripped off 10 straight wins to reach 20-6.
The powerful bats of junior shortstop Andrew Merseal and senior catcher Austin Almany guided the Lancers to a comeback win over West County in the Class 3 District 3 championship game, the first title for the program since 2014.
But Pius head coach Dan Oliver says senior center fielder Nate Schwer has been a key part of this team’s success.
Senior Tate Ramey and sophomore Zander Street have teamed up to form a dynamic duo of pitchers, and St. Pius will need their best stuff to knock off Valley Park.
At 17-4, the Hawks are on a 10-game win streak of their own.
Oliver says the Lancers have been battle-tested by good clubs all year long.
St. Pius won its last sectional matchup in 2014.
The Lancers look to move on to the Class 2 baseball quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.
Coverage begins with the Flieg’s Equipment Pregame Show at 3:30 on AM 1400 KJFF.
