(Festus) Trying to replace one of the best players in program history can be tricky. But the St. Pius Lancers have handled the transition fairly well. After losing superstar AJ Agers, the Lancers still managed to go 13-11 in 2021. With so many first-time varsity players last year, St. Pius head coach Kevin Halley feels his team can make a big leap this season.
One area where losing Agers could have hurt was on offense. But the Lancer lineup was particularly strong at the top. Senior Riley Cappozzo and sophomore Rylee Bohnert combined to score 55 runs last season, and senior Sophie Meyer lead the team with 28 runs batted in while hitting .383. With more reps under their belt and some new faces joining in, Halley believes his team is in a position to put plenty of runs on the board.
Starting pitcher Jesse Roberston is back, and McKenzie Quick is a highly-anticipated transfer. Halley says he always sets the bar high for his teams, but he believes this one can reach it.
St. Pius will begin the 2022 softball season by taking on St. Dominic’s in O’Fallon on August 29th.
